Today was quite a day! I slept in because I set the alarm for the PM (i'm an idiot.) so i woke up after a nightmare that les and i broke up (no we didn't. it's just a dream. we don't do that anymore) and it was 7 30am! UGH. i work 8 to 4 but the night before i actually worked 8 to 8 pm ugh. so i was pretty exhausted...especially having to cook and all.
so today i had to run some errands for the planners. my firm has "upgraded" my position from filing clerk to filing clerk/ archive clerk/ student planner. so i report to about 10 people all of whom do not know one another. today i had to do some zoning checks for a case...and i made a trip to the north york planning office.
Gosh was it embarassing not to know how to make a planning inquiries. not that i dont know what i'm asking (it's about legal non-conforming use aka 201 coming alive!!). but i didn't know i had to sign in and wait almost an hour for 3 questions. so armed with some 50 year old map i sat and waited for my name to be called.
here's something i learned...
PPR = preliminary project review. - review of proposal to determine compliance with zoning bylaw.
PAL = pre-application applicable law review - detailed review of proposal intended for future building permit application to determine zonning compliance and cconfirm compliance with all other applicable law. fee for PAL review is 25% of builidng permit fee.
it took me two hours of precious filing time to find out these things. easily could have been on a website. or taught to me at waterloo. last week if ound out much more about something much more complicated in sudbury within 10 minutes b/c a senior planner worked at my firm. imagine if i had to drive to sudbury...
isn't that crazy? there should have been a course at waterloo called PLAN 101.1 How to make a Planning inquiry at different municipality (if you don't have connections)
Tomorrow i work at 7 which means i have to get up at 5...so bed time for moi. here's some pics!

a guard at buckingham palace had to stretch out his feet by repeatedly marching from one side to the other side of the palace. weird how there's music stands all over the place.
we ALMOST missed our flights. damn Underground. matt sitting on his luggage eating a 1pound sandwich.

Congrats planner!
Seriously, what did Planning prepare us for?
I have to agree. I feel like I know absolutely nothing about the real Planning world.
Planning prepared us to know how to 'fake' things well.
If you don't know the answer, fake it til you can find out.
lol
